Listen and feel four points to teach you the quality of bedding

Ms. Liu: Recently, I came across a quality inspection report on bedding products conducted by the Beijing Municipal Administration of Industry and Commerce. It mentioned that some bedding items had issues like excessive pH levels and poor color fastness. I also noticed that in a similar inspection last year, a well-known brand was found to contain azo dyes that release harmful aromatic amines. I'm wondering what impact these不合格 (non-compliant) indicators can have on bedding products, and whether they pose any health risks. I'd like to hear from experts on this matter. **Understanding Health Risks** According to the findings from the Beijing Municipal Administration of Industry and Commerce, some bedding products failed tests for dye fastness, washing shrinkage, and pH levels. What do these terms mean, and how can unqualified bedding be dangerous? Wang Baojun, director of the National Textile Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, explained that high or low pH levels, excessive formaldehyde, and the presence of azo dyes in bedding can all pose serious health risks. He pointed out that if the pH level of bedding is too high or too low, it can irritate the skin and make it more susceptible to bacterial infections. Azo dyes that release carcinogenic aromatic amines are particularly dangerous. These substances can be absorbed through the skin over time, especially when in long-term contact with the body. Once inside, under normal metabolic conditions, they may break down into harmful amines, which can damage DNA and potentially lead to cancer. In addition, excessive formaldehyde can cause irritation. Formaldehyde tends to evaporate into the air, and if not properly removed during production, it can remain in the fabric. When used in bedding or curtains, it may gradually release into the indoor environment. Contact with sweat or moisture can further increase the amount of free formaldehyde, leading to respiratory and skin irritation. **Assessing Quality and Usability** After reviewing the data, the reporter found that color fastness and washing shrinkage were among the most common issues in several inspections. These factors directly affect the product’s performance and usability. Color fastness refers to how well the fabric retains its color after washing or use. Standards typically require at least a 3-grade rating, but if a product only scores 1 or 2, it may fade quickly and even stain other clothes. The washing shrinkage rate measures how much the size of a textile product changes after washing. If this is not within acceptable limits, the bedding may shrink or deform, making it uncomfortable or unusable. Odor is another important factor checked in quality inspections. Wang Baojun explained that certain chemicals used in processing for flame resistance or anti-static properties might leave an odor if not fully rinsed. According to national standards, odors like mildew, gasoline-like smells, fishy scents, or chemical odors are not allowed in bedding or clothing. **Simple Ways to Spot Poor Quality** Although most consumers can't easily test for these issues, Wang Baojun shared some simple methods to identify potentially unsafe products. First, smell the item—if it has a strong chemical odor, it's best to avoid it. Second, check the color—avoid overly bright or dark colors, as they may indicate the use of harmful dyes. Red and black fabrics, for example, are more likely to contain azo dyes. Products with heavy patterns should also be approached with caution, as these may be glued onto the fabric, often containing formaldehyde. You can also rub a damp cloth on the fabric; if color comes off, the color fastness is poor, and such products should be avoided. **Don’t Be Fooled by "High-Tech" Features** Many bedding products today claim to have antibacterial or anti-mite features. But according to Wang Baojun, these are often just marketing tactics. In reality, antibacterial treatments mainly target bacteria like E. coli or Staphylococcus, which are commonly found in everyday life and don’t necessarily pose a major risk unless ingested. As for anti-mite bedding, experts suggest that mites are widespread, and even if a product is labeled as anti-mite, it may not be necessary. Regular washing, ventilation, and cleaning are usually sufficient to keep your bedding clean and safe.
