lisa’s kensington knit skirt

Today, we're thrilled to introduce Lisa from our Advisors Circle, who’s here to showcase her stunning version of the Kensington Knit Skirt—a pattern that takes the classic black skirt to the next level. For years, I’d been meaning to sew a basic black skirt—it’s such a timeless wardrobe essential, and mine was long overdue. Having something so versatile could complete countless outfits, but somehow, it never seemed exciting enough to tackle. That changed when I discovered the Kensington Knit Skirt pattern. The pleats and the bow detail instantly added a touch of flair, transforming a simple design into something truly special. Plus, the comfort of knitting combined with its quick construction sealed the deal. It felt like a dream come true! Choosing the fabric proved to be a bit of a challenge. I wanted something with flow yet not overly clingy. Eventually, I settled on a textured pique double knit from Telio, drawn by its subtle visual interest. I hoped the texture would add depth compared to a plain black fabric and maybe even camouflage any imperfections. When the fabric arrived, I was cautiously optimistic. While it was incredibly soft, I worried about its drape and elasticity. To ensure success, I decided to take extra steps to stabilize the fabric. First, I interfaced both the front and back yokes with a knit interfacing to provide additional structure where it mattered most. Next, I carefully glued and clamped the overlay edges in place before stitching them down. If you don’t have glue basting tools, hand-basting works equally well. This precaution eliminated any slipping or sliding during sewing, resulting in a clean, professional finish—something crucial with knits, which don’t handle unpicking well. Since I don’t own a coverstitch machine, I used Steam-A-Seam Lite to fuse the hem before stitching. This stabilized the edge, preventing it from stretching out while sewing across the grain. Despite my initial reservations, I’m absolutely smitten with my finished Kensington Knit Skirt. It’s exactly the kind of project that reignites sewing inspiration and elevates those foundational pieces in your closet. Are you inspired to create your own Kensington Knit Skirt?
