lisa’s kensington knit skirt

Today, we’re thrilled to introduce Lisa, a valued member of our Advisors Circle, who’s here to showcase her version of the Kensington Knit Skirt—a pattern that adds a touch of sophistication to the classic black skirt. For years, I’d been meaning to sew a basic black skirt—it’s such a timeless wardrobe essential—but somehow it always seemed to get pushed aside on my sewing list. After all, while it’s practical and versatile, it just didn’t feel particularly inspiring. That changed when I discovered the Kensington Knit Skirt pattern. The pleats and the tie add a stylish flair that elevates it beyond the usual basics. Plus, the comfort of working with a knit fabric makes it both a joy to sew and wear. And did I mention how quickly it comes together? Sewing projects that are both efficient and chic are hard to resist! Choosing the right fabric was a bit of a challenge. I wanted something with a bit of drape, but not overly clingy. After much deliberation, I settled on a textured pique double knit from Telio. I thought its subtle texture might make it more interesting than a plain black, and perhaps help disguise any less-than-perfect areas. When the fabric arrived, I admit I had my doubts. It was soft, but I worried it had too much stretch and drape. Still, I decided to go ahead and give it a shot, but I wanted to take extra care. First, I interfaced the front and back yokes with a knit interfacing to add some structure where it seemed necessary. Next, when attaching the overlay, I glued-basted the edges and clamped them in place with binding clips before sewing. Hand-basting could also work if you don’t have glue baste, but the glue method really helped keep everything in place while sewing. Knits can be unforgiving when it comes to ripping seams, so precision is key. Since I don’t have a coverstitch machine, I used Steam-A-Seam Lite to fuse the hem in place before stitching. This kept the hem stable and prevented the fabric from stretching during the process, which is especially important when sewing along the crosswise grain. I’m absolutely thrilled with my black Kensington Knit Skirt. It’s exactly what I needed to reignite my sewing enthusiasm while adding a refined touch to my wardrobe. Sometimes, all it takes is the perfect pattern to inspire us to create something truly special. Are you ready to sew your own Kensington Knit Skirt?
