Asmita recently shared her latest creation—a cozy pajama set crafted from the Camp Shirt and Lisboa Shorts patterns. Her choices are nothing short of incredible, creating a piece that’s both practical for lounging at home and stylish enough to step out in!
This past year has been filled with many firsts for me, starting with my very first attempt at making a proper nightgown, followed by a halter top (using the Enmore pattern), and most recently, shorts. When the Lisboa shorts pattern first came out, I was thrilled because I’d just discovered the joy of wearing shorts, and this pattern, with its straightforward elastic waist, seemed like the perfect beginner project for my first-ever pair of handmade shorts.
While intricate patterns that teach new techniques are fantastic, there’s also something to be said for simplicity. A one-scissor pattern allows for versatility in styling, which is exactly what I aimed for with my Lisboa shorts. I decided to turn them into part of a matching pajama set.
The top is a Camp shirt in size 4A, which I’ve modified quite a bit. To give it a relaxed, casual vibe, I used some high-quality linen from my fabric stash. The selvedge simply reads "European shirting linen," and it crumples beautifully, adding a touch of elegance to the whole ensemble.
I initially planned to make a size 12 based on my measurements (waist 30-31", hip 41"), but the toile turned out far too large. Since the shorts are designed to be roomy, I opted for a size 10 instead. For my final version, I made two adjustments: I shortened the crotch length by half an inch and narrowed the waistband to four inches to achieve a slightly gathered look rather than the intended flat waistband. Typically, I need to shorten patterns due to my height (5'4 ½"), but surprisingly, this pattern didn’t require any additional shortening. I kept the standard five-inch seam allowance. Initially, I debated whether to include pockets, but I ultimately decided to keep the front ones—after all, who wouldn’t prefer having pockets?
The process of deciding whether to add piping for a more traditional "pj" aesthetic took some deliberation. Eventually, I chose to skip the piping altogether and instead added a delicate running stitch using cotton embroidery thread wherever I had considered adding piping. I believe the result is understated yet charming.
One of the unexpected benefits of this project is the flexibility it offers. The top and shorts can be worn separately, and I could even venture out in just the shorts if I wished.
Every new garment I make feels like a learning experience, and this project taught me to reconsider how I style basic pieces from my wardrobe. Wearing the Lisboa shorts and Camp shirt together creates a chic pajama vibe, but worn separately, they don’t immediately remind me of each other. This versatility is what truly makes a well-crafted garment special.
